Paulo Coelho wurde 1947 in Rio de Janeiro geboren. Er ist Autor zahlreicher internationaler Bestseller, darunter "Der Alchimist", "Veronika beschließt zu sterben", "Elf Minuten", "Untreue" und "Die Spionin". Seine Bücher wurde bisher in 81 Sprachen übersetzt und mehr als 215 Millionen Mal verkauft. 2009 wurde "Veronika beschließt zu sterben" verfilmt. Seit 2002 ist der Schriftsteller Mitglied der brasilianischen Literaturgesellschaft Academia Brasileira da Letras. Zur Vielzahl an Preisen und Ehrungen, die er bereits erhalten hat, gehören unter anderem die Goldene Feder, das Platin-Buch vom Hauptverband des österreichischen Buchhandels sowie die Auszeichnung als UN-Friedensbotschafter.
