Did you know that America's librarians were the superheroes of the largest book drive in history? Take a trip back in time to discover the story of World War II soldiers who found solace and escape by reading amidst the chaos of war. These brave Americans, thrust into intense military service, sought refuge in the pages of books. When asked about their most coveted items for donation, an unexpected plea emerged -- more books! This newfound hunger for books prompted Americans at home, led by the nation's librarians, to donate millions of titles to soldiers during the war. Starved for Books is a compelling story that emphasizes the power of literature and knowledge during even the most challenging times. Starved for Books, written for middle school ages and above, tells the story of librarians and other Americans who donated enormous amounts of books to U.S. soldiers. Author Carole Marsh Longmeyer says, "Readers will feel the power of the need for books and the power of books in ways they have never thought of before." This new narrative, non-fiction title includes a glossary of terms, a bibliography, a mini-history of WWII, and engaging graphic novel elements beautifully illustrated by artist Lee Barrow.
