Ian Rankin wurde 1960 in Fife, Schottland geboren. Er studierte Englische Literatur in Edinburgh und arbeitete als Erntehelfer, Schweinehirte, Alkoholtester, Journalist und Punk-Musiker. Rankins Debütroman "Verborgene Muster" erschien 1987 ist auch der erst Teil seiner Krimireihe um Detective Inspector John Rebus. Mittlerweile umfasst seine Krimi-Serie 22 Fälle. 2009 mischte sich eine weitere Kriminalroman-Reihe, diesmal um Malcolm Fox von der "Abteilung für interne Ermittlungen" ("Ein reines Gewissen" und "Die Sünden der Gerechten") unter die Liste seiner Werke. Der für sein Lebenswerk unter anderem mit dem Diamond Dagger, British Book Award und Order of the British Empire ausgezeichnete Schriftsteller lebt heute mit seiner Familie in Edinburgh.
