Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Variations in the Key of K can be construed easily as a collection of lyric essays that the author sometimes refers to as biographical fictions, but there is enough form and narrative cohesion, across the various narratives, to call it a novel. It is full of names and details familiar to most college educated readers: Franz Kafka, Pablo Picasso, William Blake. Franz Kafka wrote a book about a person who turns into a bug and Kafka wanted all his writings to be burned after he died; Pablo Picasso was a genius and a sham all at once; William Blake believed his poems were dictated to him by spirits. It is a book written in the spirit of poetry, though it is constructed as a succession of narratives, and also written in the spirit of philosophy and the pursuit of wisdom for the love of wisdom, rather than the pursuit of wisdom for the glory of wisdom. Stein's novel takes a skeptic's view of the machinations of biography and the inventions that are called "history." Yet it is meant to celebrate and love the artists it portrays. Even the very, very confused and self-destructive ones.
