Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"A Gallery of Eccentrics" is a witty and scholarly exploration of some of history's most unusual and colorful individuals. Written with the sharp insight and humor characteristic of Morris Bishop, this work presents a collection of twelve biographical portraits of "originals and extravagants" who defied the social norms of their eras. From the ancient world to the nineteenth century, these profiles celebrate the human spirit's capacity for nonconformity and singular obsession.

The collection spans a diverse array of characters, ranging from the Roman Emperor Elagabalus, famed for his bizarre and extravagant whims, to the brilliant but tippling classical philologist Mr. Professor Porson. Each sketch is crafted with a keen eye for detail, bringing to life the quirks, habits, and intellectual feats that set these men apart from their contemporaries. Bishop explores the thin line between brilliance and absurdity, providing a fascinating look at how these figures navigated a world that often struggled to understand them.

Through these elegantly composed essays, "A Gallery of Eccentrics" offers more than just entertainment; it provides a unique lens through which to view social history and the evolution of human personality. It is a classic study of the outliers who, through their defiance of convention, have remained memorable long after their more traditional peers have been forgotten. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
