Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"The Comedies of Terence" presents the complete surviving works of Publius Terentius Afer, one of the most significant playwrights of the Roman Republic. This collection showcases the six plays-"Andria", "Hecyra", "Heauton Timorumenos", "Eunuchus", "Phormio", and "Adelphoe"-which have exerted a profound influence on European drama and literature for centuries. Unlike the more boisterous works of his predecessors, Terence's comedies are celebrated for their refined language, sophisticated character development, and psychological depth. Each play explores timeless themes of family dynamics, romantic entanglements, and the complexities of human relationships, often through the lens of the "New Comedy" tradition. Known for his famous maxim, "I am a man, I consider nothing human alien to me," Terence brought a unique level of humanity and moral inquiry to the stage. This translation captures the elegance and wit of the original Latin, making these classical masterpieces accessible to modern readers. Whether for students of the classics or lovers of world drama, "The Comedies of Terence" remains an essential volume for understanding the foundations of Western comedic storytelling. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
