Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"An American Jezebel: The Life of Anne Hutchinson" is a compelling biographical study of one of the most defiant and influential figures in early American history. As a charismatic midwife and spiritual leader in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Anne Hutchinson challenged the rigid patriarchal and theological foundations of the Puritan establishment. This work delves into the Antinomian Controversy, a religious and political crisis that shook the young colony to its core, leading to Hutchinson's famous trial and subsequent banishment. The narrative explores her intellectual courage and her insistence on the "covenant of grace" over the "covenant of works," documenting her stand against the powerful governors and ministers of her time. By advocating for personal conscience and spiritual autonomy, Hutchinson became a central figure in the struggle for individual rights in the New World.A vital resource for understanding the roots of religious liberty and the history of women in colonial society, this biography highlights the enduring legacy of a woman who dared to confront the religious orthodoxy of the 17th century. It remains a significant portrait of intellectual independence and the social tensions of early America. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
