Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"Le Cid, Horace and Polyeucte" brings together three of the most influential masterpieces by Pierre Corneille, a foundational figure of French classical tragedy. In "Le Cid", Corneille explores the agonizing conflict between romantic love and filial duty, centering on the hero Rodrigo and his struggle to avenge his father's honor. This play marked a turning point in theatrical history, sparking intense debate and defining the standards of the neoclassical genre."Horace" shifts the focus to the legendary origins of Rome, presenting a stark examination of patriotism versus family bonds during the combat between the Horatii and the Curiatii. Finally, "Polyeucte" delves into the realm of religious devotion and martyrdom, depicting a Roman noble's conversion to Christianity and the resulting tensions with his family and the state. Together, these plays exemplify the grandeur of 17th-century French theater, showcasing Corneille's mastery of character and his deep preoccupation with the concepts of gloire (glory) and devoir (duty). These works remain essential for understanding the development of Western drama and the exploration of the human will in the face of insurmountable moral dilemmas. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
