Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"Early Lives of Charlemagne" brings together the foundational accounts of one of history's most influential rulers. Primarily featuring the work of Eginhard, a close confidant and courtier to the Emperor, this collection provides an intimate and authoritative look at the life of the man who united much of Western Europe during the Middle Ages. Eginhard's "Life of Charlemagne" is modeled after classical Roman biographies, offering detailed insights into the Emperor's physical appearance, personal habits, and his immense achievements in warfare, diplomacy, and the Carolingian Renaissance.Complementing Eginhard's account are the writings of Notker the Stammerer, whose more anecdotal and legendary approach provides a fascinating contrast, illustrating how Charlemagne's legacy began to transform into myth shortly after his death. These chronicles serve as the primary sources for understanding the Frankish Empire and the foundations of the Holy Roman Empire. Readers will find a vivid portrait of a leader who balanced the roles of a fierce warrior, a devout Christian, and a promoter of education and law. This volume remains an essential resource for students of medieval history and anyone interested in the origins of modern Europe. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
