Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"The Facetiae of Poggio and Other Medieval Story-Tellers" is a vibrant collection of humorous anecdotes, witty repartee, and short narratives compiled by the celebrated Italian humanist Poggio Bracciolini. Reflecting the intellectual and social climate of the 15th century, these "facetiae" provide a satirical and often irreverent look at various strata of society, from the high-ranking clergy to the common peasantry. The work is a cornerstone of Renaissance literature, capturing the shift toward a more human-centric worldview through the lens of comedy and moral observation. This compilation also features works from other notable medieval storytellers, showcasing the breadth of the narrative tradition that preceded and influenced the Renaissance. The stories range from lighthearted jokes to sharp-tongued critiques of contemporary manners, all while maintaining an engaging and accessible style. As a literary treasure, "The Facetiae of Poggio and Other Medieval Story-Tellers" offers valuable insights into the evolution of Western humor and the historical development of the short story genre. It remains an essential read for those interested in the cultural history of Italy and the enduring power of satirical storytelling. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
