Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"Monthly Letters" is a significant collection of writings by the renowned theatrical innovator William Poel. As a central figure in the revival of Elizabethan stagecraft, Poel utilized these letters to articulate his revolutionary theories on the performance and production of Shakespearean drama. The work provides a detailed exploration of technical and artistic elements within the theater, advocating for a return to the simplicity, rhythm, and continuity characteristic of the original Elizabethan playhouse.Throughout the collection, Poel offers incisive critiques of the staging practices of his time, which he believed often stifled the inherent vitality of the dramatic text. His writings emphasize the critical importance of verse speaking, the architectural influence of the stage on performance, and the necessity of historical integrity in the dramatic arts. This volume serves as an essential primary source for scholars of theater history, directors, and anyone interested in the evolution of modern Shakespearean production. "Monthly Letters" captures the intellectual vigor of a man whose dedication to the craft fundamentally reshaped the landscape of classical theater. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
