Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"A Pluralistic Universe" is a seminal work by the renowned philosopher and psychologist William James, based on his influential Hibbert Lectures at Manchester College. In this profound exploration of the "present situation in philosophy," James critiques the prevailing absolute idealism of the early 20th century, which sought to define the universe as a singular, static whole. Instead, James advocates for a pluralistic view, arguing that reality is an ongoing, evolving, and diverse process that cannot be reduced to a solitary monistic system.James introduces his concept of the "block universe" and explains why such a rigid framework fails to account for the richness of human experience and spiritual life. By championing radical empiricism, he suggests that the world is composed of distinct yet overlapping experiences, where the connections between things are as real as the things themselves. This perspective allows for a more intimate and dynamic relationship between the individual and the cosmos.Addressing deep questions of metaphysics and the philosophy of religion, "A Pluralistic Universe" remains a cornerstone of American pragmatism. It offers a compelling vision of a world that is always "in the making," making it essential reading for those interested in the history of ideas and the nature of reality. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
