Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"A Son of the Bowery: The Life Story of an East Side American" is a compelling autobiography that chronicles the life and career of Charles Stelzle, a prominent social reformer and labor advocate. Born and raised in the poverty-stricken tenements of New York City's Lower East Side, Stelzle provides a firsthand account of the challenges facing the urban working class at the turn of the twentieth century. From his early days as a machinist's apprentice to his rise as a leading figure in the Social Gospel movement, Stelzle's narrative offers an intimate look at the intersection of religion, labor, and social justice. The work serves as both a personal memoir and a sociopolitical commentary on the immigrant experience and the evolving industrial landscape of America. Readers will find a vivid portrayal of the Bowery, the dynamics of labor unions, and the efforts to bridge the gap between the church and the common worker. This narrative remains a significant historical document, capturing the spirit of a self-made American dedicated to improving the lives of his fellow citizens and providing a unique perspective on the East Side identity. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
