Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"Zola and His Time" is a comprehensive biography and historical study of Émile Zola, one of the most influential figures in world literature. Written by Matthew Josephson, this work meticulously traces Zola's martial career in letters, exploring the relentless energy he poured into his monumental literary projects and his uncompromising pursuit of truth and social justice. The narrative delves into Zola's circle of friends and the fierce opposition of his remarkable enemies, providing a vivid portrait of the intellectual and political landscape of late 19th-century France. The book chronicles Zola's development as the leader of the Naturalist school and his cyclopean labours on the "Rougon-Macquart" cycle. A central focus is Zola's heroic involvement in the Dreyfus Affair, where his public campaigns and subsequent trials marked a turning point in French history. By drawing on his letters and personal accounts, "Zola and His Time" offers a profound look at the man who transformed the novel into a tool for social investigation. It serves as an essential account of a writer whose dedication to his principles led to both persecution and ultimate glorification as a champion of human rights and artistic integrity. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
