Federally Regulated Insurers in Canada is a first of its kind textbook, deconstructing and explaining the regulation in Canada of federally regulated insurers and the complex challenges it poses. Such entities comprise the vast majority of insurers in Canada. Governments regulate insurers, including their insurance products, given their very important roles and the position of power that insurers have vis-à-vis most consumers. As a result, this regulation focuses on two key objectives: protecting the financial rights and interests of insureds and, in the case of life insurance policies, beneficiaries; and contributing to public confidence in the insurance sector and the financial system as a whole. Furthermore, governments use the following two key means to pursue these objectives: prudential regulation, which incites insurers to prudently identify, control, and manage the various risks they face; and market conduct regulation, which, regarding insurance products, incites insurers to treat their customers fairly throughout the life cycle of these products. Federally Regulated Insurers in Canada initially explores the fundamentals necessary to examine these two types of regulation, including how they compare with insurance law. The textbook then examines the aims of, and rationale for, these two types of regulation. It also provides an in-depth view of two key regulators in the area, and explores how these regulators regulate and supervise insurers.
