Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Johnson's Lives of the English Poets, Abridged: With Notes and Illustrations is a book written by Samuel Johnson and first published in 1797. The book is a condensed version of Johnson's earlier work, The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, which was published in 1779-1781. The book contains biographical sketches of 52 English poets, including Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, and Dryden. Each sketch provides a brief overview of the poet's life and work, as well as critical commentary on their literary achievements. In addition to the abridged biographies, the book also includes notes and illustrations by the editor, who is not identified in the title page. These notes provide further context and analysis of the poets and their works, as well as explanations of historical and cultural references that may be unfamiliar to modern readers. Overall, Johnson's Lives of the English Poets, Abridged: With Notes and Illustrations is a valuable resource for anyone interested in English literature and the history of poetry. It offers a concise yet comprehensive overview of some of the most important figures in English literary history, and provides insight into their works and their place in the broader cultural context of their time. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
