Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Memoir of the Illustrious and Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem: From the Capitulation of Malta in 1798, to the Present Period (1869) is a historical account of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, a Catholic religious order that was founded in the 11th century to care for the sick and the poor. The book is written by Robert Bigsby, a British historian who was a member of the order himself. The memoir begins with the fall of Malta to Napoleon's forces in 1798, which forced the order to flee from its traditional home on the island. Bigsby then traces the order's history over the next 70 years, during which time it struggled to find a new home and maintain its charitable work in the face of political upheaval and changing social conditions.Throughout the book, Bigsby provides detailed descriptions of the order's various activities, including its hospitals, schools, and military campaigns. He also discusses the order's internal organization and governance, as well as its relationship with the Catholic Church and other political powers.Memoir of the Illustrious and Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem is an important historical document that sheds light on the history of one of the world's oldest and most influential religious orders. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the Catholic Church, the Middle Ages, or the history of charity and philanthropy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
