Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The Philippics of Demosthenes, published in 1880, is a book by Frank B. Tarbell that presents a collection of speeches given by the ancient Greek orator Demosthenes. These speeches, known as Philippics, were delivered in Athens in the 4th century BCE, and were aimed at persuading the Athenians to take action against the growing power of Philip II of Macedon. The book includes an introduction by Tarbell that provides historical context and background information on Demosthenes and his speeches. The Philippics themselves are presented in English translation, with Tarbell's annotations and commentary throughout. The speeches cover a range of topics, including the importance of defending Athens against Macedonian aggression, the need for unity among the Greek city-states, and the dangers of appeasement and complacency in the face of a looming threat. Demosthenes' eloquence and passion are on full display in these speeches, which have been studied and admired for centuries for their rhetorical power and political insight. Overall, The Philippics of Demosthenes is a valuable resource for anyone interested in ancient Greek history, politics, or rhetoric, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the political struggles of a bygone era. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
