A Humble Enterprise is a novel written by Ada Cambridge and first published in 1896. The story is set in the small Australian town of Wannon, where the protagonist, Rachel Grey, has recently arrived with her husband, a doctor. Rachel is a talented artist and longs to pursue her passion, but her husband disapproves of her artistic ambitions and insists that she focus on her domestic duties. Despite her husband's objections, Rachel begins to secretly paint and sell her artwork to support her family. She becomes friends with a group of women in the town who also have artistic aspirations, and together they form a small art society. As the society gains popularity, Rachel's husband becomes increasingly jealous and resentful of her success. As the story unfolds, Rachel must navigate the challenges of being a woman pursuing her own dreams in a society that values domesticity above all else. She also faces personal struggles as she grapples with her own desires and the expectations placed upon her by her husband and society.A Humble Enterprise is a poignant exploration of gender roles, artistic expression, and the complexities of marriage and family life in late 19th century Australia. Cambridge's prose is vivid and evocative, capturing the beauty of the Australian landscape and the emotional turmoil of her characters. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
