Ben Jonson's The Fountain of Self-Love: Or Cynthias Revels is a play that was first performed in 1601. It is a satirical comedy that mocks the vanity and self-absorption of the courtiers and social climbers of the time. The play is set in the court of Queen Elizabeth I and revolves around the character of Cynthia, a goddess who represents beauty and perfection. The Fountain of Self-Love is a central feature of the play, which is a magical fountain that reflects the true nature of those who look into it. The play is full of witty dialogue, clever wordplay, and biting satire, and is considered one of Jonson's most successful works. This edition of the play, published in 1908, includes an introduction by Willy Bang, which provides historical context and analysis of the play's themes and characters.
