The young characters must learn to rely on each other and work together to overcome the obstacles they face. They also struggle with issues of power and authority, as they attempt to establish their own rules and leadership structure.Throughout the novel, Thomas paints a vivid picture of a world in chaos, with vivid descriptions of the ruined cities and landscapes.
