The Coulee Cricket is a novel written by Axel Leonard Melander and first published in 1917. Set in the coulees (narrow valleys) of Montana, the story follows the life of a young boy named Johnny, who is known in the community as the ""Coulee Cricket"" due to his love for the outdoors and his ability to mimic the sounds of nature. As Johnny grows up, he becomes increasingly interested in the world beyond the coulees and dreams of one day leaving to explore the wider world. However, his plans are put on hold when he falls in love with a local girl named Mary and is forced to confront the realities of life in the coulees. The novel explores themes of love, identity, and the struggle between tradition and progress. It also offers a vivid portrayal of life in rural Montana in the early 20th century, with detailed descriptions of the landscape, wildlife, and the unique culture of the coulees.Overall, The Coulee Cricket is a charming and poignant coming-of-age story that captures the spirit of the American West and the timeless struggle to find one's place in the world. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
