The House of Scindea is a historical fiction novel by John Hope, first published in 1863. The story is set in India during the mid-19th century and follows the life of a young Englishman named Arthur Desborough, who travels to India to work for the East India Company. Desborough is assigned to the court of the Maharaja of Scindea, where he becomes embroiled in the political and social intrigues of the region. He falls in love with the Maharaja's daughter, Princess Ayesha, but their relationship is complicated by the differences in their cultures and the political tensions between their families. As Desborough navigates the complex world of Indian politics and society, he must also confront his own prejudices and biases. He learns to appreciate the richness and diversity of Indian culture, and comes to understand the injustices that the British colonial system has inflicted on the Indian people. The House of Scindea is a vivid and engaging portrayal of life in colonial India, with richly drawn characters and a compelling plot. It offers a nuanced perspective on the complex relationships between colonizers and the colonized, and the ways in which cultural differences can both divide and unite people. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
