Gabriel García Márquez, geboren 1927 in Aracataca, Kolumbien, hat als Schriftsteller ein umfangreiches erzählerisches und journalistisches Werk geschaffen. Er gilt als Pionier des magischen Realismus und ist Preisträger des Literaturnobelpreises. García Márquez war bereits während seines Jurastudiums journalistisch tätig und schrieb Artikel und Reportagen. 1950 brach er sein Studium ab und konzentrierte sich auf seine Journalistenkarriere, die ihn unter anderem nach Barranquilla, Bogotá, Rom und Paris brachte. Als Schriftsteller erlangte er mit dem Roman "Hundert Jahre Einsamkeit" schlagartig internationale Bekanntheit. Zu den Themen, die Gabriel García Márquez in seinen literarischen Werken auffasst, gehören neben politischen Themen auch Einsamkeit und individuelle Isolation. Zu weiteren bekannten Büchern gehören "Ich bin nicht hier, um eine Rede zu halten", "Leben, um davon zu erzählen", "Chronik eines angekündigten Todes" und "Die Liebe in den Zeiten der Cholera". García Márquez starb am 17. April 2014 in Mexico City.
