Isla Cerritos is located on the northern coast of Yucatán, Mexico, and was occupied for nearly two centuries. Topics studied in the archaeology of this coastal site include: aspects related to the early occupation and abandonment of the island; its settlement patterns; analysis of the coastal community before and after becoming a port for a powerful regional capital; its role as a port of Chichén Itzá, a regional capital in Yucatán during the tenth and eleventh centuries; understanding Isla Cerritos' relationship with other coastal communities, demonstrating that this island was part of complex social, economic, and political processes that occurred along the coast and inland of the Maya lowlands. The detailed archaeological analysis conducted on Isla Cerritos demonstrates that this type of study can contribute to the archaeological study of islands in a global context, regardless of their chronology.
