The book explores the romantic relationship between Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge, a young woman who died at the age of 22. The author delves into the life of Ann Rutledge, her family, and her community in New Salem, Illinois. The book also examines the impact of Ann Rutledge's death on Abraham Lincoln, who was said to have been deeply affected by her passing. Babcock uses historical documents, letters, and personal accounts to piece together the story of this ill-fated romance. The book provides a unique perspective on Abraham Lincoln's personal life and the emotional toll that his political career may have taken on him. Overall, The Soul of Ann Rutledge is a fascinating look at one of the lesser-known aspects of Abraham Lincoln's life and the woman who captured his heart.1919. With a frontispiece by Gayle Hoskins. Babcock primarily wrote historical fiction. In this story both the love and the faith of one of earth's noblest souls is simply and intimately told. The story begins: Ann! Ann! Ann Rutledge! Hallo! Hallo! The cheerful voice belonged to a rosy-cheeked girl who shouted in front of Rutledge Inn, one of the straggling group of log houses that made the village of New Salem, Illinois, in 1831. Pausing in front of the Inn, the animated girl repeated her call lustily as she watched for the door to open. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
