The story revolves around a group of soldiers who are stationed in a remote outpost in the western United States. The soldiers are faced with a moral dilemma when they discover that the local saloon owner is selling alcohol to the Native American population, which is strictly forbidden by the army. One of the soldiers, Private John Wesley, takes it upon himself to launch a campaign to shut down the saloon. He is supported by a group of fellow soldiers and a young woman named Jessie, who runs the canteen at the outpost. However, their efforts are met with resistance from the saloon owner and his hired thugs. As tensions rise, Private Wesley is accused of a crime he did not commit and is put on trial. The novel explores themes of justice, morality, and the power of community action. It also sheds light on the treatment of Native Americans by the army during this time period.
