The book tells the story of Abbott's seven marriages and the subsequent imprisonments he faced as a result of his erratic and sometimes violent behavior towards his wives. The book is a candid and sometimes shocking account of Abbott's life, detailing his struggles with mental illness and his attempts to find love and companionship. The book provides a unique glimpse into the life of a man who was both a victim and a perpetrator of domestic violence, and offers insights into the social and cultural norms of the time.
