Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The Burgomaster's Wife is a novel written by Georg Ebers. It is set in the 16th century in a small German town called Nordhausen. The story revolves around the life of the town's burgomaster, or mayor, and his wife, Maria. Maria is a beautiful and intelligent woman who is devoted to her husband and their children. However, her life takes a dramatic turn when her husband dies suddenly, leaving her to take on his role as burgomaster. As a woman, Maria faces many challenges and obstacles in her new position of power. She must navigate the complex political landscape of the town and deal with the prejudices and biases of the people around her. She also has to contend with the advances of a wealthy merchant who wants to marry her and take over her position as burgomaster.Throughout the novel, Maria struggles to balance her duties as a mother and wife with her responsibilities as a leader. She must make difficult decisions that affect the lives of the people in her town, and she must do so without compromising her integrity or her values. The Burgomaster's Wife is a compelling historical novel that explores themes of power, gender, and morality. It offers a vivid and detailed portrayal of life in 16th century Germany and a powerful depiction of a woman's struggle to assert herself in a male-dominated society. The three men, so united in feeling, grasped each other's hands firmly for a moment. A silent vow bound them in this hour, and when Herr von Nordwyk and Van Hout turned in opposite directions, the citizens who met them thought their tall figures had grown taller still within the last few hours. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
