Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The Pomp of the Lavilettes by Gilbert Parker is a novel set in the small French-Canadian village of St. Saviour. The story revolves around the Lavilette family, who are known for their wealth and social status in the community. The head of the family, Honore Lavilette, is a pompous and arrogant man who is despised by many in the village. The novel begins with the arrival of a stranger, Gaston Belward, who is taken in by the Lavilette family. Belward is a mysterious and enigmatic figure who is rumored to have a scandalous past. His arrival sets off a chain of events that leads to the downfall of the Lavilette family. As the story unfolds, secrets are revealed, and the true nature of the characters is exposed. The Lavilette family is shown to be corrupt and morally bankrupt, while Belward is revealed to be a man with a troubled past but a strong sense of honor. The Pomp of the Lavilettes is a tale of greed, betrayal, and redemption. It explores themes of social class, family, and the consequences of one's actions. The novel is written in a lyrical and descriptive style, transporting the reader to the quaint and picturesque setting of St. Saviour. He was bearded, but young; his hair grew low on his forehead, and, although it was summer time, a fur cap was set far back, like a fez, upon his black curly hair. His forehead was corrugated, like that of a man of sixty who had lived a hard life; his eyes were small, black and piercing. He wore a thick, short coat, a red sash about his waist, a blue flannel shirt, and a loose red scarf, like a handkerchief, at his throat. His feet were bare, and his trousers were rolled half way up to his knee. In one hand he carried a short pole with a steel pike in it, in the other a rope fastened to a ring in the bear's nose. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
