The Romance of Leonard da Vinci is a biographical novel written by the Russian author Dmitri Merejkowski. The book is a fictionalized account of the life of the famous Italian artist, inventor, and scientist Leonardo da Vinci. The novel is set in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, during the height of the Italian Renaissance. It follows da Vinci's life from his childhood in Florence to his later years in France, where he served as court painter to King Francis I. Merejkowski's novel explores da Vinci's artistic and scientific achievements, as well as his relationships with other historical figures such as Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and the infamous Cesare Borgia. The book also delves into da Vinci's personal life, including his romantic relationships and his struggles with his own sexuality. Throughout the novel, Merejkowski presents da Vinci as a complex and multifaceted character, whose genius is often at odds with the social and political forces of his time. The Romance of Leonard da Vinci is a compelling and vividly imagined portrayal of one of history's most fascinating figures. This book is incomparable in the magic power of evoking startlingly vivid pictures of the Middle Ages. It is a gorgeous pageant, full of pomp and magnificence. Here and there the reader is given a glimpse into the mortal and humble frailties and exigencies behind the grandeur. This work is a fabulous historical novel that is full of a sly, crisp humor and contains some portions which are veritable poems in prose.#This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
