Hermes Britannicus is a dissertation written by William Lisle Bowles that explores the Celtic deity Teutates and his connection to the Roman god Mercury, as well as the origin and purpose of the Great Temple at Abury. The book delves into the historical and mythological aspects of Teutates and Mercury, examining their similarities and differences and how they were worshipped by the ancient Celts and Romans. Bowles also provides evidence and arguments for the theory that the Great Temple at Abury was designed as a sacred place for the worship of Teutates/Mercury. The book is a detailed and scholarly work that sheds light on the religious beliefs and practices of ancient cultures and their impact on modern society. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
