Her eldest niece, Alice, is a headstrong young woman who dreams of a life beyond the confines of their small town, while her second niece, Lucy, is more reserved and content to stay close to home. The youngest niece, Phoebe, is a carefree child who brings joy to the household. As the girls grow up, they each face their own challenges and struggles.
