The story is set in the mid-19th century and revolves around the life of a young man named Charles, who is the son of a wealthy English family. Charles is sent to a Jesuit school in France to receive his education, where he becomes close friends with a Jesuit priest named Father Ignatius. As Charles grows older, he becomes increasingly interested in the Catholic faith and decides to convert, much to the dismay of his family. His father disowns him and Charles is forced to leave his home and live with Father Ignatius. The novel explores the themes of religious conversion, family relationships, and the role of the Jesuit order in society.
