King and Commonwealth: A History of Charles I and the Great Rebellion is a historical book written by R. Meriton Cordery and first published in 1876. The book is a detailed account of the reign of Charles I and the events leading up to the English Civil War. Cordery examines the political and religious tensions that existed during Charles I's reign, including the conflict between the king's desire for absolute power and the demands of Parliament for greater representation. He explores the rise of Puritanism and the influence of religious beliefs on the political landscape of the time. The book also provides a detailed account of the key events of the English Civil War, including the battles of Edgehill, Marston Moor, and Naseby. Cordery examines the military strategies employed by both sides and the impact of the war on the wider population. Throughout the book, Cordery provides a balanced and nuanced view of the conflict, examining the motivations and actions of both Charles I and the Parliamentarians. He also explores the wider social and economic context of the time, including the impact of the war on trade and commerce.
