Hincks was a renowned scholar of Semitic languages and a pioneer in the decipherment of cuneiform script. In this book, he discusses the two types of writing found at Persepolis: the Old Persian cuneiform script and the Persepolitan or ""imperial"" Aramaic script. Hincks provides a detailed analysis of the inscriptions, their content, and their historical significance. He also compares them to other ancient inscriptions found in the region.
