However, Jed soon discovers that the family has their own set of problems and secrets, and he must use his wits and resourcefulness to help them overcome their difficulties.Throughout the novel, Alger Jr. explores themes of perseverance, hard work, and the importance of family. He also highlights the struggles faced by those living in poverty and the ways in which society can work to help those in need.Jed, The Poorhouse Boy is a classic example of Alger Jr.'s popular ""rags-to-riches"" stories, which were popular in the late 19th century.
