Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The Life of Bishop Berkeley is a biographical work written by John Nicholas Norton and published in 1861. The book chronicles the life of George Berkeley, an Irish philosopher and bishop who lived from 1685 to 1753. Norton's work provides a comprehensive account of Berkeley's life, including his childhood in Ireland, his education at Trinity College in Dublin, and his later years as a bishop in the Church of Ireland. The book also explores Berkeley's philosophical ideas, which were influential in the development of modern philosophy. Berkeley is best known for his theory of immaterialism, which argues that the physical world is an illusion and that everything exists only in the mind. Norton delves into this theory and its impact on philosophy, as well as Berkeley's other ideas on perception, language, and theology. In addition to his philosophical contributions, Berkeley was also a prominent figure in the Anglican Church and played a key role in the establishment of the College of California, which later became the University of California, Berkeley. Norton's book provides a detailed account of Berkeley's involvement in these institutions and his efforts to promote education and religious tolerance.Overall, The Life of Bishop Berkeley is a comprehensive and insightful biography that sheds light on the life and ideas of one of the most important philosophers of the 18th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
