Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Tom Sayers, Sometime Champion of England: His Life and Pugilistic Career is a biography of the famous English boxer Tom Sayers, written by Henry Downes Miles and originally published in 1866. The book provides a detailed account of Sayers' life, from his humble beginnings as a bricklayer's apprentice to his rise to become one of the most celebrated boxers of his time. Miles chronicles Sayers' many fights, including his most famous bout against American boxer John C. Heenan in 1860, which was widely regarded as the first world heavyweight championship fight. The book also delves into Sayers' personal life, including his relationships with his wife and children, as well as his struggles with alcoholism and financial difficulties. Throughout the book, Miles provides a vivid portrait of the brutal and often deadly world of bare-knuckle boxing in the mid-19th century, detailing the rules, techniques, and culture of the sport. He also offers insights into the social and political context of Sayers' era, including the role of boxing in the working-class culture of Victorian England. Overall, Tom Sayers, Sometime Champion of England is a fascinating and informative account of one of the most legendary figures in boxing history, as well as a window into the broader social and cultural landscape of his time. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
