Within The Purdah is a book written by Saleni Armstrong-Hopkins in 1898. The book is a collection of stories and experiences from the author's time spent in India, specifically in the Zenana homes of Indian princes. The Zenana is a private area of the household reserved for women, and the author provides a unique perspective on the lives and experiences of these women. In addition to her experiences in the Zenana, Armstrong-Hopkins also writes about the heroes and heroines of Zion, providing a comparison between the lives of Indian women and those of biblical characters. The book is a fascinating insight into a world that was largely unknown to Western readers at the time of its publication, and provides a valuable historical perspective on the lives of women in India. Armstrong-Hopkins' writing is engaging and descriptive, painting a vivid picture of the people and places she encountered during her time in India.
