Full colour facsimile reprint of the original First World War, War Office war diary of the 23 Field Company Royal Engineers, Divisional Troops, 1st Division, covering August 1914 to March 1919 across 381 pages. It names 149 places across 212 dated entries.Alongside the daily entries the volume carries one list of honours and awards, one report or narrative, one appendix and one diagram. Among the papers are: Awards for Bridging Canal-November 4th 1918; Copy of Messages Received from G.O.C. 2nd Bde on the Subject of the raid Period out.The diary opens at Aldershot on 4 August 1914. 1914 is spent at Borre, Havre Roven, Vendresse And Bourg and Rly Cussing Near Ypres. 1915 at Labourse Vermelles, Le Touret, Mazingarbe Philosophe, Combrain and Les Glautignies Near Le Touret. 1916 at Les Brebis Loos, Les Brebis Calonne, Fricourt and Baizieux. 1917 at Suburb of Dunkerque, Paratonnere Camp N Woeston & Het Sas, Mericourt Sur Somme and Le Clippon. 1918 is the most travelled year, 96 places against 28 in the next busiest, and is spent at Niederdrees, Maisnil-Les-Ruitz, Wormersdorf Germany and Paratonnere Farm Near Hetsas Woestan. 1919 at Ipplendorf. It closes at Ipplendorf on 24 March 1919. Les Brebis Loos is where it spent longest, 90 days across four separate stays, it came back to Maisnil-Les-Ruitz fourteen separate times, and the longest it stayed anywhere without moving was 67 days at Niederdrees.Trench and battlefield features named in the diary include Paratonnere Farm Near Hetsas Woestan, Albert & Becourt Wood, Horse Lines Regersburg Chateau, Bresle Wood and Ricour Farm near Caestre.In 1914 it is also recorded at Farnboro Stn. Southampton, Marolles Near La Ferte Milon River Ourcq, Sammeron River Marne, Perles, Hazebrouck, Poperinghe, Pilitem, N. Ypres, Ypres and Hooqe. In 1915 it is also recorded at Cambrin, Lillers, Hurionville, Les Brebis Loos, Rambert, Oblinghem, M Bernechon, Beuvry, Fontenelle Fmc and Raimbert. In 1916 it is also recorded at Philosophe Mazingarbe 58 Metre Point, Lillers, Les Brebis Loos Colonne, Ruitz, Wargnies, Molliens Au Bois, Baisieux, Albert & Becourt Wood, Albert And Becourt and Albert Becourt And Quaorangle Trench Approx. In 1918 it is also recorded at Horse Lines Moued To Reigerborg Chatead, Bank Of Yser Canal Near Bridge 3, Horse Lines Regersburg Chateau, Ilminster Camp. & Reigersburg chateau, Ricour Farm near Caestre, N. Annequin, Transport Lines Noeux Les Mines, Noeux-Les-Mines, Moved To Maisnil Les Ruitz and Maisnu-les-Ruitz.
