Full colour facsimile reprint of the original First World War, War Office war diary of the South African Brigade 1 South African Infantry Regiment, Divisional Troops, 9th Division, covering March 1916 to February 1918 across 140 pages. It names 88 places across 111 dated entries.Alongside the daily entries the volume carries five Operation Orders and five maps.The diary opens at German 1st Syston on 4 March 1916. 1916 is spent at Duisans, Front Line Arras Sub Section J.I, Longueval, Frevillers and Front Line Carency. II. 1917 is the most travelled year, 50 places against 39 in the next busiest, and is spent at La Thieuloye, Simencourt, Arras Front Line J.I. Sub. Section and Gouzecourt. 1918 at G.H.Q Ros. Cappy, Don Camp Moislains, Front Line Gouzecourt, Support Line Gouzecourt and Left Sub Section Geozecourt. It closes at G.H.Q Ros. Cappy on 28 February 1918. La Thieuloye is where it spent longest, 57 days across three separate stays and the longest it stayed anywhere without moving was 30 days at Duisans.Trench and battlefield features named in the diary include Trenches Trescault Section, Star Fish Trench, Trigger Wood, Mametz Wood, High Wood, 1st Line Trenches and Canal Bank Ypres.In 1916 it is also recorded at Trigger Wood, Montauban Maricourt, Brikol Old, 1st Line Trenches, Maricourt, Samer, Villers au Bois, Sapport Line Berthonval, Support Line Berthonval and Berthonval II. In 1917 it is also recorded at Arras, Sub Section Arras Front Line, J-I Section Rt. Sector Arras Front Line, No.1 Section, Front Line Arras No.1 Sect. Rt, Y. Hutments W-Etrun, Monchy-Breton, Hermaville, Penin and Yhutments Near Etrun. In 1918 it is also recorded at Bugade Reserve.
