(Service) Battalion Essex Regiment operation order No. 2; With Reference to 12th Division order No. 79, Para 5 C; Instructions for the Collection and Evacuation of Prisoners; Instructions for Dealing with Civilians.The diary opens at Aldershot on 24 May 1915. 1915 is spent at Ploegsteert, Vermelles, La Bourse, Bethune and Thiennes. 1916 is the most travelled year, 84 places against 38 in the next busiest, and is spent at Arras, Vermelles, Cottes, La Pugnoy and Bethune. 1917 at Sombrin, Arras, Magnicourt, Duisans and Conchy. 1918 at Arqueves, St Sauflieu, Le Sart Near Merville, Herissart and Acheux. 1919 at Somain and En route for England. It closes at En route for England on 8 May 1919. Arras is where it spent longest, 103 days across twelve separate stays, it came back to Vermelles sixteen separate times, and the longest it stayed anywhere without moving was 35 days at Sombrin.Trench and battlefield features named in the diary include Aveluy Wood, Mametz Wood, Ploegsteert Wood and Plugstert Wood T.24 G 9.2.In 1915 it is also recorded at Etrehem, Wardrecques, Borre, Pont De Nieppe, Ploegsteert Wood, Plugstert Wood T.24 G 9.2, Loos, Vermelles Halte, Noyelles Les Vermelles and Vermelles Quarries. In 1916 it is also recorded at Hingette, Givenchy, Le Quesnoy, St Hilaire, Upen D'Aval, Gonnehem, Sailly La Bourse, Noyelles, Quarry and Vermelles Tohen Zolumn. In 1917 it is also recorded at Izel Le Hameau, Agnez-Les-Duisans, Izel Lez Hameau, Agnez Lez Duisans, Wanquetin, Halloy, Fosseux, Arras 419, Railway Triangle and H 19 Central. In 1918 it is also recorded at Sailly Sur Les Lys, H 21 Central, Bois Grenier, Fleuxbaix Sector Left Sub, Henencourt, Warloy, Toutencourt, Harponville, Mailly Maillet and Aveluy Wood.
