Full colour facsimile reprint of the original First World War, War Office war diary of the Brigade Machine Gun Company, 140 Infantry Brigade, 47th Division, covering January 1916 to February 1918 across 113 pages. It names 62 places across 75 dated entries.Alongside the daily entries the volume carries one casualty and personnel return, three reports, narratives and plans, one Operation Order, two appendices and one map. Among the papers are: Casualties killed; Programme for the co-Operation of Machine Guns in the raid by 17th Battn. Lon Regt; Operation order No. 40 140 Machine Gun Company; O. order "A".The diary opens at Sailly-La-Bourse on 1 January 1916. 1916 is the most travelled year, 36 places against 27 in the next busiest, and is spent at Henencourt, Les Brebis, Franvillers, Loos and Hautrieux. 1917 is spent at Canal Sub-Sector Ypres, Spoil Bank, Bourlon Wood near Cambrai, Ebblinghem and Heilly. 1918 at Bertincourt, Heilly nr. Albert, Ribecourt and Rocquigny. It closes at Rocquigny on 28 February 1918. Henencourt is where it spent longest, 40 days, including a single unbroken stay of 40 and it came back to Bertincourt five separate times.Trench and battlefield features named in the diary include Spoil Bank, Bourlon Wood near Cambrai, High Wood, Ypres. Spoil Bank Sector, Ridge Wood and Maxse Redoubt.In 1916 it is also recorded at Verquin, Rupigny, Coyecque, Nedonchelle, Ourton, Gouy, Ca Baret Rouge, 3 Sections in Souchez, Hersin and Berthonval Sector. In 1917 it is also recorded at Dominion East Camp, Coy. H.Q at Lock House, Ypres. Spoil Bank Sector, Quebec Camp, Reninghelst, Murrumbidgee, Lion Camp, Ridge Wood, Ascot Camp and Etrehem. In 1918 it is also recorded at Heilly and Flesquieres.
