Full colour facsimile reprint of the original First World War, War Office war diary of the 4th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, 154 Infantry Brigade, 51st Division, covering March 1916 to March 1919 across 357 pages. It names 145 places across 211 dated entries.Alongside the daily entries the volume carries thirteen reports, narratives and plans, seven Operation Orders, seven defence schemes and three maps. Among the papers are: Report on raid by 4th Bn Gordon Hrs on enemy trenches At K.23.d.75.50; 1/4 Battn Gordon Highlanders report on operations; Report on operations; 1/4th Battalion the Gordon Highlander report on operations; Addenda No.1 to operation order No. 7; 4th Battalion Gordon Hdrs operation order No; Instructions on Preceding to trenches; Operation order.The diary opens at Mervieux on 1 March 1916. 1916 is the most travelled year, 71 places against 54 in the next busiest, and is spent at La Sabliere, Etrun, Ecurie, Bruce Huts and Armentieres. 1917 is spent at Hermin, Lattre-St-Quentin, Fremicourt, Tinques and Lederzeele. 1918 at Cambrai, Roclincourt, Bellevue, Ecurie Wood Camp and Mont St Eloy. 1919 at Houdeng, Buir, Cambrai, Vlatten and Manage. It closes at Buir on 31 March 1919. Cambrai is where it spent longest, 71 days, including a single unbroken stay of 31 and it came back to La Sabliere ten separate times.Trench and battlefield features named in the diary include Logeast Wood, Mailly Wood, Trenches Front Line, Soyer Farm, Trenches 84/89, Res Trenches, Trenches Greenland Hill and No 1/3 Trench.In 1916 it is also recorded at Doullens, Ivergny, Duisans, Sabliere, Maroeuil, Villers Brulin, Bernaville, Nr Becourt, Highwood and Support Trenches Bazentin Le Grand. In 1917 it is also recorded at Bruce Huts, Wolfe Huts, Rubempre, Candas, Maison Rolland, Sailly Bray, Bonnelle Huts, Nouvion, Canchy and Gueschart. In 1918 it is also recorded at Courcelles, Bailleulval, Logeast Wood, Lindop Camp Fremicourt, Trenches Support Line, Lebucquiere, Trenches Front Line, Colincamps, Barly and L'Ecleme. In 1919 it is also recorded at Vlatten-Buir.
