The 50th (Northumbrian) Division's North African campaign was marked by sustained, costly fighting. Returning to the Western Desert in November 1941, the division took part in the defence of the Gazala Line, where the 150th Brigade's isolated box was attacked and overrun by Rommel's forces in June 1942. The subsequent breakout through the Axis lines was followed by further heavy fighting at Mersa Matruh, El Alamein and during Operation Supercharge, where the 151st Brigade advanced through formidable German defences under a massive artillery barrage. In Tunisia, the division fought at the Mareth Line and Wadi Akarit, enduring severe casualties while helping force the Axis withdrawal. Four Victoria Crosses were awarded to members of the division during this campaign. By May 1943, after nearly two years of continuous operations, the 50th Division had played a substantial role in the destruction of Axis forces in North Africa, having suffered exceptionally heavy losses
