The 1st Regiment of the Lothians and Border Yeomanry served with the 51st (Highland) Division, which had been dispatched to France to reinforce the Maginot Line at the outbreak of the German offensive in 1940. As the campaign collapsed, the division attempted to fight its way back to the British Expeditionary Force. Maneuvering south of Paris, the regiment engaged advancing German forces south of the Somme near Abbeville. Heavily outnumbered, it conducted a fighting withdrawal of roughly sixty miles over six days, eventually reaching the port of Saint-Valery-en-Caux. There, exhausted and cut off-its food, ammunition, and supplies spent, the regiment surrendered on 12 June 1940 during the Battle of St Valery-en-Caux.Before this capitulation, elements of the regiment had already been evacuated during Operation Aerial. These personnel later reconstituted the regiment as the 1st Lothians and Border Horse, which was attached to the 30th Armoured Brigade of the 79th Armoured Division. Returning to France on D-Day, the regiment served with the division throughout the campaign in North-West Europe until the end of the war. From D-Day to Germany's surrender, the regiment sustained comparatively modest but notable losses: 17 killed, 90 wounded, and 16 missing in action. Materiel losses included four Sherman gun tanks and thirty-six Sherman Crab mine-clearing tanks destroyed.
