During the Normandy invasion, the 49th AAA Brigade played a pivotal role in Allied air defence. On 6 June 1944, under Brigadier General Edward Timberlake, it deployed four anti-aircraft artillery groups (thirteen battalions) to protect the Omaha and Utah beachheads, forming an immediate shield against Luftwaffe attack and enabling the secure landing of troops and materiel.As the campaign expanded, the brigade was redeployed to defend Antwerp against the V-1 flying bomb offensive, helping neutralise over 1,000 "buzz bombs" and safeguarding the key logistical hub sustaining Allied operations in Northwest Europe. It then advanced with the First Army through France, Belgium, and into Germany, providing continuous mobile air defence for forward airfields, depots, transport routes, and critical crossings such as the Remagen Bridge.Its layered structure combined 90mm heavy guns for high-altitude interception, 40mm Bofors and .50-calibre weapons for low-level defence, self-propelled battalions for mobility, and searchlight and barrage balloon units for night and area denial. The brigade's adaptability made it a cornerstone of Allied operational continuity under persistent aerial threat.
