The 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary's Own) were among the British Army's most distinguished armoured reconnaissance regiments of the Second World War, playing a pivotal role from Dunkirk to D-Day and beyond.Formed in 1922 through the amalgamation of the 13th Hussars and 18th Royal Hussars, the regiment spent the inter war years on garrison duty across Britain, Egypt, and India, adopting its full title in 1935. Transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps shortly before war broke out, it first saw action in 1940 as the reconnaissance regiment of 1st Infantry Division during the Battle of France, fighting a fighting withdrawal to Dunkirk and evacuation.Rebuilt in Britain, the regiment returned to action in 1944 with 27th Armoured Brigade, equipped with Sherman DD amphibious tanks. On D-Day, 6 June 1944, it launched into heavy seas and swam ashore on Sword Beach, one of the few units to do so successfully, providing immediate armoured support to assaulting infantry.From Normandy onward, the regiment fought continuously through north-west Europe. It played a key role in the hard-fought battle for Mont Pinçon, the highest ground in Normandy, before advancing through the Rhineland and into Germany.
