Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

First performed in 422 BCE, The Wasps is Aristophanes' satirical comedy attacking Athenian legal culture and the excesses of litigious democracy. In this sharply constructed play, Aristophanes turns his comic eye toward the jury system of classical Athens. The story centers on an aging juror whose obsession with serving on the courts becomes both personal mania and civic commentary. Through exaggerated character and biting dialogue, the play critiques the manipulation of juries, the culture of accusation, and the volatile energy of democratic politics in wartime Athens. While rooted in the political realities of fifth-century BCE Athens, The Wasps remains accessible as a study in civic satire. Its humor ranges from slapstick to pointed institutional critique, revealing Aristophanes' skill in blending theatrical spectacle with social commentary. Frequently studied in courses on classical literature, drama, and political history, the play offers insight into ancient democracy and the enduring dynamics of public justice.
